Quick update on Obama's push for universal healthcare.
Today's Guardian newspaper details that the Democrats are going to collect extra tax from the 2 million wealthiest Americans to help provide healthcare for 37 million of their fellow less fortunate American citizens. Tax well spent I think and I'm confident the wealthy won't mind a bit!
Fierce opposition is expected from the Republicans and the healthcare industry is expected though.

Surprise, surprise Obama's attempts at healthcare reform are decreasing his popularity rating.
A Washington Post poll shows support for his policy falling from 57% in April to 49%, due it appears because the opposition are calling it " socialism "!
So, this opposition would prefer capitalism , responsible for 45 million Americains being denied healthcare than the alternative which would see it provided.
Know which I prefer.

I lived in Norway for a long time, and I never heard anyone, including my fiance's family, ever bitch or complain about the system's health care etc.
I might have heard a few belly aches at the taxes on Cigarettes and Alcohol....(Which I understand, jeesh, it's either eat or smoke...lol), but never once about Health Care.....

So President Obams is struggling to win over the country to his plans for universal healthcare....no surprises there then. Glad to see he's not caving in, rather fighting hard to prevail, in the interests of the 1 in 6 Americans who are without healthcare insurance.
I'm struck by a couple of stats on the subject:
1. Since 2002 the profits of the top 10 health insurance companies have increased by 428 %. ( source: Harper's magazine ).
2. CNN estimates that $375m has so far been spent by both sides lobbying for and against the proposed reform.
I deplore both of these statistics.
