Big Bang in Beruit

RE: Big Bang in Beruit
It's horrific. I wouldn't rule out the sheer possibility this happened due to some corporate/government negligence or bad infrastructure or whatever (it's Lebanon after all). Though it's also possible it could be some terrorist attack, who knows.

We had a frightening hour-long "electric attack" in my home village in Lebanon two decades ago. Purely due to negligence on the part of those in charge of the electricity at the time.

I was watching the news this morning, it looks like it is leaning to a couple of things electrical issues that caused a fire and set off poorly stored ammonium nitrate. It's going to take years for them to recover from this. They are not only dealing with that, but the pandemic too, and the chemical fallout too. And the lack of power.

Tim McVeigh used ammonium nitrate for his truck bomb.

It certainly is too early to tell the cause sure. But considering it was an industrial building, it also could be simple bad management and neglect.

First I’m hearing of this, I don’t pay attention to the news that much.

I'm not implying that this was a bombing, just that the suspect material is adequate for the damage.

True, ammonium nitrate is highly volatile. I got what you meant now. It was part of both events.

It might not even be that. Even with good management and proper maintenance, accidents still happen.

Oh shut up.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Amfo is stable as hell....  That is a large reason for it's common use. You can set fire to it. You can pound on it with a hammer all day - and nothing will happen.

You can blow up firecrackers in it and it will not detonate. It takes a priming charge - like dynamite - to detonate.

I know. I have experience with it.

....

That said - I saw 60 lbs of it blow a hole in sandy soil - 9 feet deep and 20 feet wide.

I suppose there is a pressure factor when you get thousands of tons with it - but I don't think a simple fire would detonate it. There was probably some other agent - that detonated first....
