Who did it better, the original or the cover?

RE: Who did it better, the original or the cover?
Well, here’s three:

Sublime: By the Rivers of Babylon (orig. The Melodians, about five years before Boney M’s version)

I just love the unpretentious DIY feel of this version, just some guitars and I think some Orff percussion.

Langley Schools Music Project: The Long and Winding Road (one of very few Beatles covers that I think holds a candle to the original)

The very spare production really helps the desolation of this song, and somehow the girl really nails the long and winding aspect in ways even Macca doesn’t.

Vanilla Fudge: I Want it That Way (orig. by The Backstreet Boys)

I’ll just let the son of the temporary lead vocalist say it:
Quote: My dad (Bill Pascali) did the lead vocals for this song. I remember when he first told me the band was doing a cover from the Backstreet Boys. I was so happy because I was very young and I loved them (Idk what was wrong with me). Anyway many years later, I realize this version kicks the originals ass.
Also, very long, loud, and drawn out covers of popular songs are kind of Vanilla Fudge’s wheelhouse. If you’ve watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, you should be well aware of this, because they soundtrack the scene where Leo and Brad Pitt kill the Manson Family.

It was written by Paul Simon, so theirs is the original.

That's the reason I gave the caveat. Most people, that I share my opinion about this cover with, think that the original is better than Disturbed's cover. Maybe I'm just that easily influenced by commercialization of covers or whatever, but I do like Disturbed's cover more. Not significantly more or anything, I just think the difference in style in the original and the cover is not really comparable (like the canard of comparing apples and oranges), and I happen to like the cover more, without actually comparing them directly myself.

BTW, thanks for clearing up that Simon & Garfunkel's version is the original.

Just a difference in opinion. It's all good. Cool

My point exactly.

Humans come up with some good shit, an those who follow improve on it, and others fall short.

Pat Benatar, who did Heartbreaker" before her?

I think you missed the point of this post. Who did better covers than the original artist?

For example I think Pat Benatar did a better cover of "I Need A Lover" than John Cougar Mellencamp"

Or Pat Benatar's cover of The Beatles " Helter Skelter"

Blondie "I'm A Gonna Love Ya Too" a cover of the Buddy Holly song.

I think  Whitney Houston did a better version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You"

No, I didn’t miss the point. All of the songs I listed were covered by the named artist.

‘The Tide Is High’ was originally recorded by The Paragons, and ‘Heartbreaker’ by Jenny Darren.

Boru

Boru, please by every stretch of your existence PLEASE keep being a pain in my side.

PLEASE TAKE THIS AS A COMPLEMENT....... I LOVE YOU, I MEAN IT. I did not know.
