Just four years ago the Supreme Court ruled that states can in fact compel electors to vote a certain way:
What if the legislatures in Wisconsin and Georgia decide to force their electors to vote for Trump? The outcome might be unprecedented, but the procedure isn't. It was ruled to be perfectly legal in 2016.

Yes, but it wasn’t Caesar’s assassins who primarily shaped the history of the western world.
We are in much worse shape. Caesar was very competent and self-disciplined. Those who first took over Caesar’s mantle were also at least self-disciplined, astute, competent, responsible, and in their own way still deferential to the traditions of the state. The Roman Empire didn’t start with a Caligula, Nero or Commodus.

I think the question is under what circumstance. If there is a pre-existing law that says that electors will be awarded a certain way, then that's unproblematic. The question is whether a legislature, upon being tasked with awarding electors according to an existing law, can change that law at that time. It's not clear that they can and have it apply to those electors. I have read little on that question, but what I have read indicates the courts would take a dim view of such a thing. It may even be illegal, depending upon how "ex post facto" laws are defined.

I hope you're right.
But I'm convinced that these Christian Nationalist authoritarians are going to try something like this. They might not succeed... but I think they'll try it.

We're being told that we can only call it a coup if they succeed, or we believe that they can succeed.

Whatever you call it, I think Trump will use every tool at his disposal to remain in office. That includes his 70 million cultists.
They may believe some demonstrably stupid shit- but they're often rabid in those beliefs. And they're arguably better organized than the Left seeings how they meet up at church every week.

Other people suspect the same thing of Trump.

Trump, in his deliberate incompetence, just put a lamplight on the cracks in the system. How people will react to that, either exploit it or fix it, only time will tell ...

Quote:Republican leaders in Michigan and three other critical states won by President-elect Joe Biden say they won't participate in a legally dubious scheme to flip their state's electors to vote for President Donald Trump. Their comments effectively shut down a half-baked plot some Republicans floated as a last chance to keep Trump in the White House.
State GOP lawmakers in Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have all said they would not intervene in the selection of electors, who ultimately cast the votes that secure a candidate's victory. Such a move would violate state law and a vote of the people, several noted.
