Can anyone direct me to a written or recorded account of how proselytizers start conversations with passers-by and what their strategies to try to convert them are?

I am an evangelist. The answer is simple. Proclaim the message of Christ. This comes in different forms and every evangelist has his own insight and perspective. Alot of us, preach the same thing to different people, but i like to preach and direct incentives towards specific people. I love my job and wouldnt change it for the world. I do not get paid for the works that i do.

I don't think that researching a hate preacher is going to produce the kind of dialogue you imagine.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Stephen Fry tells a wonderful anecdote about how his interaction with a Mormon evangelist got him kicked out of Salt Lake City. He was part of a tour, and - for most of it - the guide was pointing out landmarks and talking about the history of Utah. When the group arrived at the huge Temple, the proselytizing started. The guide told the group, 'One of the most wonderful things about the Latter Day Saints is that, why you die, you will be reunited with your entire family for eternity.'

At this point, Fry raised his hand to ask a question and said, 'What happens if you've been good ?'. He was asked to leave.

I did that tour, and I couldn't leave with my wife fast enough when we reached the end. He is lucky he got kicked out at the temple (you aren't allowed in).

The proselytizing centre has huge murals of Joseph Smith on the walls talking to the angel Moroni, and they greatly encourage you to fill out your address so they can hound you for eternity (probably even after death).

Not sure if this has been mentioned... but if you want to have a conversation with an evangelist, just ask them and tell them it will be televised. What's the problem? Maybe take a check at your libel and defamatory laws first. But you should be good to go.

Also what's the point? You think your going to expose something that isn't already known? There have been enough documentaries about the church, about the evangelists that lie and get rich from it. Bill Maur did one with full LA level production. Nobody cares. It will fade away in its time. Takes time for bad thoughts to be non-thoughts. Your better focused debunking the new church. The idea that science isn't real.

That's a real threat, this crazy flat earth and god grants heaven shit didn't actually lead to anything other than power and stupidity. Not a big deal and not worthy of anybodies time. Yet major news outlets are challenging what is fundamentally, observably true... Now we are in a battle for the truth as a concept. Try that out for a documentary...

Go big or go home.
