It seems to be the Camry over here....

There seem to be a few differences. You use petrol and we use gas. Also there is that whole silly metric thing.

A bit confusing; the ticket price was $17990.

I got $1000 more on the trade in than they offered and got $500 off the remainder. The negotiation technique I used is called "locking yourself in". A powerful position IF you are prepared to walk away, which I was. Made it clear I liked the car and would buy it,cash if and only if they would accept my offer. They did. This time I managed to reduce the rip-off level a bit. I f I knew about cars I'd buy at auction.

My 2000 Hyundai is OK-ish; a small ding and few scratches. Mechanically sound, but needs about $1000 (retail) spent on a list of minor things. They have a workshop,so may spend up to $500.If they wholesale it they will get their money back. The new owner will make between $1500-2000. They are probably making around $2500 from me.

Did you account for the exchange differential between the US and Australian dollar?

No, because currently the rates are $AUD 1.07= $US1.00.

Doesn't seem as if it would be that significant....unless the car cost $1 billion...which is what Bush would have paid for it if Halliburton wanted one.

From the US Toyota website. A brand new Camry starts in price from $US19,820 (which does not include state sales taxes and other charges).

In my state Victoria a base model Camry with manual transmissions will set you back $AUD30,490 ($AUD27,718 exclusive 10% GST) and that is before the other charges which increases the price to $AUD33,786.20.

I do believe even deducting the various taxes and charges (not to mention the 10% tariff on imported vehicles) which come with buying a new car. Australians do pay more for new cars than Americans and even Europeans, that would explain why there are a lot of quite old cars on Australian roads.
