I perceive the rise of modern conspiracy theories to be the result of a particular non-news media outlet, named after a vulpes, worming its way into impressionable conservative minds already rotted by christianity.

They certainly seem to be. Both religions and CTMs (conspiracy theory movements) tend to:

-Donate scads of money to their leaders, not understanding that they're being scammed.

-Repeat the same ritual phrases over and over.

-Be unencumbered by facts.

-Reject science and  scientific consensus.

-Be unclear about the difference between a uniform and a costume.

-Place undue weight on the pronouncements of people who have been dead for centuries.

-Be untroubled by cognitive dissonance.

-Routinely validate both Dunning and Kruger.

If the universe was a school, and all the planets with intelligent life attended, Earth would take the short bus to get there.
