Drive-thru ashes!

Being an Aussie I was thinking that the religious were celebrating 'Ash Wednesday Fires' or somethng like that

I wouldn't be surprised if some priests got drunk a few hundred years ago and one of them said, "I know! Let's tell people they have to let us put ashes in the middle of their forehead and they can't wash it off! It would be hysterical to see all these dopes walking around all day with smudges on their foreheads!"

You could drive around to the back of the church where they would have a menu board. It could look like this: 1) Adultery 2) Stealing 3) Lying 4) Cheating 5) Fighting 6) Swearing etc.... Then the driver pulls up and speaks into the microphone. The conversation could go something like this: "Welcome to St. Shithead's. What is your sin?" "I'd like to confess to two number threes, one number two and sixteen number sixes." "Very well. Please pull around to the window for your pennance." The driver would then pull up to a side window where the priest would hand the driver a computer printout detailing the sinner's pennance. Next! Fast and efficient!
