Here's the problem -- for democracy to survive, there must be a head of state with the authority and public support to override an authoritarian.

The jury is still out on whether the Windsors will keep that public support.  If it fails, they are done.  But if it continues, there is less chance of Commonwealth countries descending into autocracy.

I tend to view the British monarchy as somewhat like dandruff - it doesn’t do any real harm, but people seem to enjoy spending large amounts of time fiddling with it.

They changed the name to Windsor in 1917 due to the Germanophobia surrounding WW1.
