Countries have different names in different languages
June 24, 2021 at 5:49 am

Countries have different names in different languages.
Now some say that it would be a point of Honour and Politeness to call all countries be the names that they use themselves.
What do you think about it?
As an example:
May we say Hungary, or must we say Magyarország, the way the country calls itself?

Or The US?
Or America?

The poll is missing the option ‘This is a really stupid question.’

Well I get pretty pissed when people start talking about that fictional country the Republic of Ireland as if it were the place where I live. I live in Ireland or, if you want to be pedantic, Éire. The other name was one invented by the UK government because they didn't want to piss off the racist little statelet in the six counties not granted their rightful independence in 1921 and only abandoned in 1999 when they finally had to admit that the country could use its own name.

Have you ever heard of countries like Wales, Hungary, Albania etc.
Probably not.
Have you ever head of counties like Cymru or Shqiperi? You have, you just don’t know it.
