Hey man. Why don't you start an intro thread here?

People are ready to debate matters of fact here at all times (it's actually one of the things I like best about the forums). You seem to have made an assumption about the Assumption and Boru was just pointing that out.

But if you introduce yourself and describe what your interests are, folks here are way more apt to connect with you. Launching into debate is awesome, but it's good to say "hi" and let folks know who you are first.

Thanks, good advice.  For the record, it was not my intention to launch into debate, but nor was it my expectation to be condescended to by somebody who thinks his opinion about what makes for an appropriate attack on religion is more valid than mine because he's heavily involved in a web forum, or created it, or whatever.  It's pretty clear that he wasn't just pointing something out.  It would be obvious to even Spock or Valentine Michael Smith that my tongue was pressed firmly into my cheek when I wrote the OP.

Sometimes there is overlap between "snarky" and "condescending." Like, when somebody is SUPER SNARKY, it may seem condescending.

The thing is, Boru has his facts straight about the Assumption. You made an error. What he first pointed out had little to do with his opinion.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't call Boru out for being dickish (or whatever) if you perceive him that way. But it might be worth your while to read what he wrote, google Mary's Assumption and read about that.... then reinterpret the conversation.

OR (better yet) say hello in the intro thread and forget about this thread for a while. Come back to it later after you've had some more jovial exchanges.

PS: we love rigorous debate here (as do I)... so heads up on that....

RE: The Assumption of Mary
Maybe the assumption that leads to the fireworks was that Mary had an orgasm. But come on, that's GOT to be a part of the story. I mean, drowning almost every living thing on earth because some people aren't following his ten little rules is one thing, but imagine what it would do to God's reputation if he were going around knocking up teenagers without even giving them orgasms.

RE: The Assumption of Mary
Today (8/15) is actually the celebration of the "Dormition" of Mary.
Since she was conceived (Immaculate Conception) without Original Sin, she didn't have to die.
So before the Assumption, we have the Dormition.
Mary fell asleep, and just appeared to have died, then we assumed she went to heaven.  Angel

There actually is a lot to be said for her "ideal" place in Western Civilization, and what happens later in the "ideal' of "courtly love" etc
in Medieval literature.
Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. - Joseph Campbell  Popcorn

My guess is that this is the first time that sentence was ever written.
