What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?

On one of our walks, my best buddy, Colby(my dog) and I saw a strange, very tiny version of a beaver running around my neighbor's driveway. Its back had that same curved/hunched look and it was brown. Looking it up, muskrats and Coypu/Nutria and the beaver, all look very similar but are different sizes(muskrat being smallest and beaver being the biggest) with different tails(beavers have that flat paddle, coypu have a long skinny tail, and muskrats have a long slender tail with a wideness to it that resembles the beaver paddle but not as wide and flat) and live in different regions.

A funny story about muskrats.  Several years back my husband kids and I took a trip to visit my parents in Iowa.  There were a couple acres of land to the south of their house  that they owned and it was bordered on the south side by a creek.  So dad didn't have to mow the area there were some men from town who planted a large sweet corn patch and some other veggies.

I was washing dishes and looking out the window above the sink that looked out over the corn that was about four feet tall.  Near the creek side I thought I saw corn stalks falling.  It was one of those rub your eyes and look again moments.  Stalks would fall and then move toward the creek seemingly on their own.  This went on a few minutes and a pretty far sized area of corn was disappearing to the bank of the creek.

Dad grabbed one of his guns and went down there to dispatch what turned out to be some muskrats who were busy harvesting corn.

This is a nice piece of information to have in your head:

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I learned, quite painfully, that you can be allergic to the material used for sutures in dental surgery. After a miserable two hour session at the dentist on Wednesday I was back for over an hour today. The weekend was the longest weekend ever...and not in a good way.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (she of Frankenstein fame) was goth like a boss. She:

-Lost her virginity on her mother's tomb.

-After Percy Shelley died, carried his calcified heart around with her for the next 30 years.

-Lived in an actual crypt for a time.

Fucking goth archetype. Makes the current crop of goth chicks with their whole look-how-edgy-I-am-with-my-nose-ring-and-black-nail-varnish motif look like a bunch of sad little posers.

We had some goth kids in high school. One day my sister and I scared the shit out of them.

Actress Emma Roberts is Julia Roberts's niece. It never occurred to me that they were related. Nor did I know Emma's father, Eric Roberts, IS her dad, nor did I know he was Julia's brother.

I knew about Julia and Eric, but the Emma connection is new to me. Thanks!
