Also, it costs about two grand to dig a sub40hp tractor out of thick clay mud.
We once pulled a bullock out of a bog with a tractor. Tractor got stuck. Neighbouring farm loaned us their extraction rig. That got stuck. Eventually got everything out with five chains of heavy cable, several winches, and a lot of bad language.

There is a bizarre amount of intrigue in the glitter industry:
Note: Apparently, it looks like Sociable's wrong in his hypothesis about who the mysterious buyer is, since last year, it turned out that the military supposedly disclosed that it's the #1 buyer. Allegedly, if Bridget Mulroy's right, it was in this DoD document (made public record last year), but I can't find where.

The Kolarbyn Eco Lodge was built to honor coal production, which was a huge business at the time.
Kind of ironic for an eco-lodge to be associated with that which is highly poisonous for the environment.

The oldest intact road bridge still in every day use is in Greece, near Argos. It was built by the Mycenaean Greeks during the Helladic period, roughly contemporary with the siege of Troy.

Neanderthals were manufacturing birch tar (an adhesive resin made from burning birch bark) about 100 000 years before H. sapiens learned the trick.
