The Highland midge (Culicoides impunctatus) is a tiny, biting fly notorious in Scotland, especially from late spring to late summer, that swarms in damp, still conditions at dawn and dusk, causing itchy bites.

It's interesting how those of European persuasion refer to something as X-ed off as crossed instead.

That's because crossing something off looks like this, and refers to the practice of drawing a line across the text.
