Questions and Observations for American Football Fans

One thing I don't get, is why after the pass, the yardage is attributed to the pass.
I think yardage on the spot of the pass completion should be attributed to where the pass was made, and any gain after the completion should be attributed general yardage.
For example, if a quarterback throws a 5 yard pass, from the spot of the catch, then the receiver runs from their own 20 yard line to score, why is that considered an 80 yard pass, when the catch was only five yards off the snap? I am not trying to negate the score. But the actual pass was only 5 yards, the rest of the run to the end zone was avoiding being tackled.

Sometimes I talk to red birds, other times they range from sunset yellow to toxic green. Chirp, chirp, chrip, little birdies. Chirp, chirp, indeed.
Ever see a sink, and wonder why it's called a sink? I mean it's not sinking, it's just there. How could anyone be so dumb to name it that.
This one time...................yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah, etc.

1. Stats don't matter. Points matter.
2. A receiver logs receiving yards. A passer logs passing yards. They both get credit because in order for a receiver to catch a ball, a passer must throw it and conversely as they are a team.
3. It really is this simple.

The one misleading stat that would drive me nuts as a QB is when a pass is thrown right on target, almost caught by the receiver but bobbled, then intercepted. The QB gets an INT for that. Thanks, Mr. Receiver.
Why is it so?

Under center, or shotgun, a football question.
September 30, 2021 at 10:06 pm
For college and NFL watchers, what say you?
I have noticed in my 55 years that the pace of the game has become blazing fast compared to when I was growing up. When I was a kid, and teen and even in my early 20s, the philosophy was to be under center first and second down, run and get to third and short, to allow for a play option. But over the years, and my grey hair, it seams just about every play more often than not starts with a shotgun position and passing more than running.
I like the old game which was more under center than today's game which is mostly shotgun.

I think that points are the end goal of any sport. The scoreboard is ultimately what matters for sure. But I am talking about pace, regardless of the sport. I don't understand with the MLB why it is so damned easy today for a baseball player to hit a homerun from Yankee Stadium where the baseball ends up in North Korea. It is like MLB stadiums are like play pods at Chuckey Cheeses. And I like college basketball far more than the NBA, the NBA just seams like running back and forth and showing off.
I guess it is a slow burn thing, not a quick satisfaction thing. Passing seems to be far easier than running and that is why the shotgun mostly exists. Yes, just like an MLB player hitting one out of the park, or and NBA player hitting a 3 point winner, everyone loves those highlights. But I guess I like the behind the center, pass or run, because it is slow burn, pass or run.
But I do agree, stats do not matter. Passing yards, running yards, time of possession, turnovers, penalties, do not matter. I agree that at the end of the game, the only thing that matters is the scoreboard. I 100% agree.
But I still miss the lack of running game and under center offence I grew up with.
An aside, the other thing that bothers me about the modern football game, is the amount of ridiculous risk taking on fourth down. Of course not late in the half or end of the game, but even non key close parts of the game.
I've seen plenty of college games and NFL games in recent years where an offence would risk and lose the first down early in the game instead of punting or taking the field goal.

The slow burn only works when the defense and special teams can cover it. It's not about what you like. It's what you can get done.
