Not excusing all the people from not doing something, just trying to figure out what they may have been thinking.
I agree. Not everyone has combat training, and not everyone is buff and tall. I can't fight my way out of a wet paper bag. But certainly I would have tried to call for help or run for help.
But in the context of a large crowd, there is a psychology as to why people join in the crime (mob mentality), or do nothing(stay out out of fear because they think someone else will do something, or jump in to stop something because they saw someone else initiate the stop.
The Nazis are a prime example of mob mentality, and very innocent people who had their own lives and families to worry about were helpless.
But in the context of this story, it certainly is a miffing why so many didn't jump in to stop it.
A long time ago I was working at a pizza joint. A huge guy stumbled through the door staggering saying he had been stabbed. It was just around high volume time so there were several employees there at the time. Nobody initiated aid at first, so I grabbed a rag, sat him down and put pressure on his chest to stop the bleeding. I had to shout at the other employees to call 911 and police. It fucking pissed me off that everyone seemed to be dragging their feet. Nobody besides me wanted to touch the guy. A detective came by about a week later and told me, the knife came millimeter's away from his aorta and if it had gone in further he could have potentially bled out.
Humans in groups can be complex in their reactions, good or bad.
