(about the video)
WOW! I must really reply to this!
So, here it is:
1. Regarding the language: I'm 99.99% certain that Jesus was not speaking greek. First off, it seems that the Israeli Jews did not 'like' the greek culture, and it was very hard for them to learn it (The Jewish historian Josephus was calling it a very hard language and only that 'very few' jews could have learnt it, as I've read). Moreover, in the gospels you can see
aramaic statements (Jesus' "Eloi, Eloi lama sabactani", Jesus nicknamed Peter with the aramaic name Cephas, etc.). So it's quite impossible for Jesus to mention either 'Hades' or 'Sheol' (the aramaic word for 'Sheol' seems to be 'Shyul/Shyoul' - that's what I've found).
2. OMG!! What he wrote there, that supposed to be "She'ol", can be read "Lo'osh" AT BEST!! :))
Sheol/She'ol is written this way:
שְׁאוֹל
DAMN IT!!
(compare to what he wrote there)
Quote:While I understand that Jesus spoke aramaic at the time and he could have very well said Sheol, which supposes to mean hell in the hebrew language, I DO NOT THINK HE SAID SUCH. This is because Sheol does not have gates, whereas Hades does.
3. Funny point: he doesn't THINK he said such! Obviously, if Jesus had said "Hades" then no one could have understood what Jesus was talking about! That's because the people were talking and understanding Aramaic!
So, nice thing, Jesus spoke
aramaic and would have used the
hebrew word Sheol. It's hard for me to imagine how!
Anyway, Sheol means 1) grave and 2) the place where dead people's souls go, which in greek it is
translated as "hades". And I believe the gospels were written in aramaic and
translated in greek.
As about the MEANING of the word:
Quote:However, after studying the massoretic text, one would see that the verb for 'mention' is in the Niph`al form. Whenever verbs are in this form they usually denote the passive or reflexive voice and mean 'causing to be done'.
From what he said, I wonder if he studied ANYTHING!! Well, at least he 'asks' us to study it!
Explanations:
The hebrew word "to remember", in Exodus 23.13 is actually in the
Hiph`il form (which is, causative active), not in Niph`al! The verbs in Niph`al form are ALWAYS (not usually) in the passive or reflexive voice. The word used for 'mention' is "Zakhar" which literally means "to remember".
In the passive voice it is (I use 3rd person, present): "he is remembered", and in Exodus 23.13 it should be translated (if INDEED in passive voice) as: "you will/shall not be remembered!"
In the reflexive voice it is: "he will remember himself", and in Exodus 23.13 it should be translated (if INDEED in reflexive voice) as: "You will/shall not remember yourselves!"
DAMN IT!!
How did he translate the passive/reflexive to "to cause to remember"??
The causative active (which is,
Hiph`il) is "he causes remembrance" (or, make a memorial, make remembrance) and in Exodus 23:13 it should be translated as: "You shall not make remembrance/make a memorial of other gods". An instance of that would be, when the Jews got out of the polytheistic Egypt, to have
kept thinking about the gods they were worshiping there. The verse in Exodus 23:13 in that case means: "forget them!"
Quote:So an actual translation would be 'to cause to remember', thus to say, to mention or, to mention or record makes sense. Looking at the context I'd say that 'to record' is the best translation.
That's again stupid: "to cause to remember" = "to record"??
"To record" literally means to write down (at least in that age, when you could not record voice on tape or on disc or something). And no wonder that he
would translate it thus: he needed his idea to work out - "Hades" is
written down (i.e. recorded) in the
greek manuscripts! He forced the translation as "do not write it down" to blame Matthew 16.18 of contradicting Exodus 23.13. Only that it's wrong: first grammatically, and second, because of the meaning of the word in hebrew.
Damn it. It's on one side funny, you know: there are a lot of guys coming with 'in the original manuscripts...', 'in the hebrew language...', but it seems that most of them HAVE NO IDEA of the language! Well, at least they 'prove' things, which the common man, that knows really nothing about it, believes. (and, to make things more BELIEVABLE, they 'show to people where to search to see that it is so', when they KNOW that no-one would search! That's because the "check to see, if you don't believe!" saying makes one TRUST and BELIEVE that it is so! WITHOUT CHECKING!!)
P.S. Names of other gods are 'mentioned' in the Old Testament. I wonder if that guy knew that. Anyway, the jews were accused of worshiping them in those verses, not asked to make a memorial on them.
