I do not think it is necessary to believe that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use, giving us by some other means the information that we could gain through them

His opening paragraphs summarise nicely what many theists fail to understand about the definition of atheism.

Quote:Because atheism is ultimately only a negative thesis: it simply states that there exists no god or gods. As such, to say I’m an atheist tells you something about what I don’t believe in, but it tells you almost nothing about what I do believe in.

It’s the positive beliefs that really matter – beliefs in values and morality; in how the world is, and how it ought to be; about what constitutes a good life; in how society ought to be run.

Quote:In order for any secular worldview to truly provide an alternative to religion, it has to be more than something we can believe in. It has to be something we can participate in.

Secular philosophies need to evolve beyond their negative statements and dry rational principles to become secular cultures.

They need to reach out and engage the community, bring people together, educate us, lift us when we’re down, inspire us and give us a place in the world.

And if they do so, perhaps much of the argument over atheism might fade away.

Many who are reluctant to turn their backs on religion may not be entirely unsympathetic with the atheist argument, but they may be unwilling to unshackle themselves from an institution that provides them with so much.

When secular philosophies can offer the same or better, and when secularism moves beyond simply stating that God doesn’t exist, then we might truly see an end to religion.

His whole idea is flawed from the start because atheists have actively chosen to take the 'non-belief' side of religion. It seems obvious (apparently not to the author) that someone who is an outspoken NON-believer would not have to prove ANY thesis ... you know why? Because an atheist isn't trying to get you to believe ANYTHING! The author also implies that without faith in religion, one can have no values or morals -- that somehow great teams of atheists will rape the virgins and corrupt the children because they don't know right from wrong. Which of course is idiocy. The author also speaks of religion's appeal as a social outlet. Give me a break. Atheists are now 20,000,000+ strong worldwide and have a "social church" like no other on earth..... the local tavern at every corner of every city in the world. If anything, its the unified denial of the religious community that creates a common brotherhood among men and unites us in a way that no religion ever could (mostly because without religious differences there's really little to fight about). Anyway, I'm actually a deist, but I almost always end up siding with the atheists on issues like this because ALL religions are so FULL of brainwashed misguided imbeciles.

Why do you think anyone is going to read the drivel from your holy book? I might as well read a page from Alice in Wonderland. It makes just as much sense (if not more).

To be honest, justmoha, I think you're just a fucking troll. Go away.

Yeeeeaaaaah - bout that. First get the question right Justmoha, you pile of wasted flesh. He asked, Is there life after GOD ... not life after death, moron. And 2nd, what the HELL?!?! You can't read from an UNPROVABLE book and site it as evidence of an afterlife! What is wrong with you????

what a dipshit. Go ahead, argue and debate, but at LEAST have some common sense about it.

Don't waste your time asking for common sense from people like his kind. They are incapable of using it.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

If you want a church life as an atheist join the UU. They will be happy to let atheists join. I met up with atheists in my community about once or twice a month or so. We have UU members in our group who says there is a group of atheists in the local UU church (talking super red state of South Carolina.)
