I think this is the first time I have seen you mention your mother, and I have never wanted to pry.

I was part of a pilot program for gifted math children in my state. There were two groups, 20 each, selected from the top 500 in each half of the state. I had to talk my math teacher into submitting my name, as I didn't actually have the grades they were recommending as criteria for submission by teachers. And I didn't take the test at all seriously, as I was giggling, and whispering jokes about the test to my classmates at my table. We got a 20-minute lecture about that between the two halves of the test thanks to my behavior. In hindsight, that probably helped, as anxiety will often hinder performance, and my attitude left me very open to considering the questions in ways that I might not have if I had gone in with a serious attitude. Anyway, when I got the letter, everybody demanded to see it. I wasn't exactly known as the brains type in school, preferring a more dirt bag style existence.

Here's a more wholesome one: playing at a College Quiz Bowl as the only representative for my college (it's a long story, but I will say that I was the only member of the team to actually be there), and not only scoring #1 as a player, but scoring more than 2/3 of the schools that actually had a full team.

In the category of stupid and regretful, I have picked up engine blocks weighing more than 300 pounds (unassisted) and put them in the bed of a truck. I have messed up shoulders, back, hips, knees and feet, needless to say. I had little patience and an obviously deleterious streak of independence. You younger people out there, don't indulge in these activities. They make for a painful life with limited range of motion in your old age.

Snuck a pair of antlers through the gate to Yosemite Park on my lap, under a blanket. I'm not sure that we fooled anyone.
Climbed 30' up two poles which supported the sign for a shopping mall with a pair of scissors in my teeth to steal a banner for an upcoming rodeo.
Laid rubber on the walkway of the central commons of my high school late one night while up to no good. I had to back in all the way between the buildings to get there.

Scuba dived (dove?) into the engine room of a sunken WWII freighter and bridge of a WWII destroyer.

I'd like to have the money back from all the tire rubber I've scorched over the years. In one case, the city had repaved the street in front of my parent's house. I went up to visit after that, and when I left, I dumped the clutch on my '69 Camaro and left two furrows about 9" wide and many feet long in the fresh material. Those furrows were there until the street was repaved, decades later. My dad was mightily pissed. Not like he wasn't a miscreant in his youth. When he got going on the corn squeezin's he would regale us with them, some of which were criminal.
