i think case by case decisions should be minimized or avoided if possible for a equitable forum open to different views. if it can’t be enunciated in a generally applied rule that can withstand scrutiny, then i think it is likely too arbitrary and will increase the role of ad hoc subjectivity.

There are few things done by staff that aren't discussed.
The main thing we don't discuss is banning an obvious spammer.
I don't understand how this topic, after three months, has some people riled up.
No matter what is done there will be those who are happy with it, those who are pissed about it, and those who move on with life.

Right. So things should never change. Got it.

There was a change made. Three months went by and it's an issue now. Got it.

This might come as a surprise to you, but that wasn't the first such change ever made. I know. How I know these things is a mystery.

And which changes are going to have a delayed reaction are a mystery to me.

We (staff) get more foam-spitting vitriol when we enforce the rules as written than we do on a case-by-case basis. Ad hoc subjectivity is already in place.
You're welcome.

you either enforce rules, and treat foam spitting vitriol as a predictable and acceptable consequence, or treat forum moderation like popularity contest where foam spitting vitriol would definitely be seen as evidence of failure.

I'm not sure exactly why the level of vitriol is a relevant metric.
