When I can get out and about I play THUNDERSTUCK at max volume. Panic Grey-haired old man in tiny Chevy Trax playin' that shit loud? No way!  I drive on.  Hilarious

I notice it's always shouting men with southern USA accents blathering on about vengeance and wrath. Never hear a female or non-white sounding voice, and it's always yelling at me.

I find it so off-putting. Does this shouting tactic work with believers? Do people like to feel awful? How does this stuff work?

I grew up in the great plains. Until my early teens it was either god blathers/music, or country with a little pop thrown in.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Oldies stations are now permanently locked on GenX. Boomers are too old to interest advertisers and Millennials and younger don’t use radios.  Bruise Violet by Babes in Toyland is oldies fare now.

Yep, over the air radio is bleak in general. I like the morning host, Michelle Willson, on WICN (https://wicn.org/ public radio jazz station out of Worcester, MA and online). She's a jazz singer, herself, but is something of a music history savant. She plays all kinds of stuff - blues, jazz, funk, soul, R&B - and usually has a theme for each show. 06:00-09:00 ETUSA weekdays.

Here's today's playlist https://spinitron.com/WICN/pl/17990614/M...-Vibe-Time

Remember back when you didn't have the scan feature on the car radio. You had to turn the knob to the next station that would come in. Especially in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, you tended to either get the screaming preachers or the talk show hosts geared to talking to people in distress. Fun times.

Sermons are like every other performing art and all other oratory: there is room for the fire-and-brimstone genre as well as the Jesus-meek-and-mild-genre.  Sometimes I like pop, sometimes I like metal.

When I was a Christian, I could sometimes find the shouty sermons rousing.  At other times they were just annoying.  A lot depended upon the skill of the speaker and my personal context.  When you listen to multiple sermons a week, it's nice to have some tonal variety to prevent boredom.
