Wish fulfillment to face the fear of death and the pain of loss.
Hallucinations, caused by a range of things, such as fever, mental illness and ingesting a range of special plants.
Then of course there is the chicanery and bare faced lies of the priestly classes and rulers over the last 10 thousand years or so.
People desperately want to believe there is something 'more' than 'now',so are easily gulled and always have been.
To be fair, there does seem to a decline in human gullibility,which seems to correlate with affluence and education.
