Of course it’s mainly “My point of view”. But I happen to be in a country where I can observe how populists are twisting religion (and everything else) to their own advantage.

You may have heard that the European Soccer Championship is currently happening over here right now. This Tuesday we played against Austria and we won (before being disqualified by the Dutch yesterday).

 
Anyway: There was this dude (the one who scored our two goals), who just had to mimic a hand sign that was used by the “Grey Wolves” an ultra-nationalist group (that still exists today) that is known all over Europe for its terrorist activities against left-wing individuals in the 70’s and 80’s.
 
So what does the BJP like Populist Party do? It recycles it. Before our soccer team was defeated yesterday, they were M.ons everywhere repeating this (basically racist) salute in their cars that were decorated with Turkish flags etc.
 
But hey:
 
The UEFA banned this dude (one of our best players) for several games after this event. So was it the smartest thing to do?
 
2) The Turkish BJP (The Justice and Development Party) does not care about national identity and is not a nationalistic party at all. We are celebrating almost all of our national holidays thanks to the efforts of local secularist municipalities. The Government itself is not spending a penny on our national holidays since the first election of the Populist Party.
 
But now, When this dude has made this gesture the president had to make a trip to Germany where he can attend all the Hijab + Grey Wolf salute of his supporters in Germany (+ the 2 to 1 defeat with the Dutch Soccer team).

So in short terms: Many other things and especially religion is easily recycled and reused by Neo-fascist / Populist movements. By this I mean Political Islam / Radical Islam / Islamic dictatorship as well.
 
When we studied the Late-Roman / Early Byzantine architecture back in my school days, we used to talk a lot about “recycled architecture”. Late-Roman engineers simply took stone parts, columns or even statues from more ancient roman buildings and used them to build their churches, fortifications, palaces etc.
 
So we need to be vigilant on this. Faith is one thing. Recycling faith into your ego-based / twisted political agenda is something else.
