That may backfire and give other parents the idea to do it to their kids as well..we are talking about fundies here right? Since when have fundies ever cared about freedoms other than their own? The fundie is right, and everyone else MUST fall in line or face eternal torture.

As you have stated yourself I'm a fundie and I disagree with what his parents are doing. We on the other hand do not know what their real reason might be because we have only heard one side of this story. Min you should have more compassion for this child than you have shown he may be striking out at the people he loves the most because he did not get something he desired, we don't know and to down his parents may do (no will do) more harm than good, if you have nothing good to say then go back to your sandbox please.

A contract like this is meaningless and you should not let it bother you Red, you need to confront the real problem you are having with your parents and come to a peaceful solution. If that becomes impossible, then when you can, move out and try and re-establish a good relationship with them, they are far more important to your life than you might know at this time.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

RE: The Contract
Godschild, I can reassure you that what Red_Baron is telling you is pretty much the whole story. He's not rebelling against them, he just doesn't believe in God any more and doesn't want to waste time going to church, and his parents for some reason think that it's of extreme utmost importance to get him into that building every week whether he gets anything out of it or not. He came to his atheism naturally, mainly through prayers which go unanswered and a general lack of factual evidence that any gods exist. While I'm sure there may be a bit of rebellion on Red's part, it mainly has to do with rebelling against his parents' constant attempts to force him to church. I'd probably be feeling the same way he does if I were him.

The very real danger here is that his parents will push him away from them when he's older and out on his own. Especially if every time he visits them they bring up religion. The best thing he can remember is that he gets to choose their rest home.

And thankyou for pointing out that I was right about fundies. Even though you tried to say you disagreed, you then went on and on putting the child down and supporting the parents decision.

You dont get to say "Im a fundy and I dont support this", and then every word after that sentence is in support of what has been done. In fact you insist that we atheists should no longer say bad things about the parents for forcing such a contract on their child.

dogschild..I say this from the bottom of my heart..you are a lying, scheming, word twisting son-of-a-bitch.

RE: The Contract
thats all i want. no church. I'm not a crazy rebel. I'm not going to take an inch and turn it into a mile exAMPLE they think i would stop cleaning the house becuase i ran over one rule and i'll see what i can get away with next.

and yes i would like my parents better if they stopped forcing religion.

they tell me i'm trying to run them over which isn't true.

LOL get this one, usually sat and sun i might have to work on both days
and they threatend to call my boss and make sure i would go to church.
i told them they were full of bullshit, and like what? my boss will fire me for not going to church?

my parent are hippocrates they say they would never force me to do stuff like sports or any extra activities.
they found that kids will rebel. example my other aunt who forced her girls to do twirling they ended up with a bad relationship with the mom.
my parents do force common house rules like cleaning which i respect.

RE: The Contract
I guess I got lucky with my parents. When I was 15 I told my parents that I didn't believe in god while we were riding in the car to church and they never made me go again. I would suggest a civil conversation on the matter, but since they are to the point of making you sign a contract I'm assuming something like that has been tried. Here's what you can do - Tell them that you want to tear up the contract and if god really wants you to go to church he will stop you from doing so. Then take it from them and tear it up in front of them.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

RE: The Contract
Hell, Red comes over to my house and helps me clean it up even though I don't ask him to. So he's not just trying to get away with doing whatever he wants. And when I said rebellion above, I think what I really meant was stubbornness. But if I had to put up with what he's having to put up with, I would think rebellion would be a natural reaction.

They do seem to be a bit crazy with getting you to church for some reason. But like I said, you probably will just have to suck it up and go with them until you get out on your own. I'd say watch out & try not to get molested by a priest but since you're 18 you're probably past the age where you have to worry about that!

rev I'm not sure how you came to your decision about what I posted, I guess you must have read between the lines and put your own words in.

Fuck off and take your barbaric religion with you.

The kid is being mentally raped by his own parents who think their fairy tales are more important than his life.
Even a dickhead like you is hard pressed to make excuses for them.

RE: The Contract
As a compassionate Christian, I would support the decision to take the contract to Church. I would show it to the pastor though and try and get a meeting with him set up. It will seem to the parents like you're trying and if the pastor is a good one (not a hell fire fundie like Westboro)he won't want you forced into the religion against your will.
