About a month ago my aunt (married to dad's brother) died after a brutal six month battle with metastatic breast cancer.
It took me a while to call my uncle, though I sent a card and also a message to my cousin (his daughter). While traveling I came down with a severe case of laryngitis and he's half deaf and any phone conversation with him would have been me squeaking out a few words and then him saying "What?". Then I spent a couple weeks sounding like a twelve-year boy whose voice is changing....anyway...
Uncle received disability from his time in the military. He provided the VA with a death certificate as required and was told by one person at the VA that his future disability would be reduced by a fairly small amount. Then he was told by someone else at the VA that the amount of the reduction would be twice what he was originally told.
He checked his bank account and ALL his disability had been taken back out of his account. He struggled to reach someone who could help him but since it was a Friday, he figured that he would wait till the following Monday to try again to figure things out.
That weekend, while waiting, he received a letter from the VA offering their sympathy for HIS passing. The sent HIM a letter of sympathy for his own death. smh
So now he has to convince the Veteran's Administration that he is still very much alive.
