The BBC in no way gives religion in general, or a specific religion, excessive air time. It represents the views of (whether we like it or not) a fair sized part of the population proportionately. I see no reason why the BBC shouldn't show religious programmes. You don't have to watch them, in the same way I don't have to watch any of the shit I don't like or agree with or in the same way a religious person probably dosen't want to watch (or fund) documentaries that are against their views or standpoint. To ban something because it dosen't line up with your ideals is the exact sort of bullshit many of us hate about oppressive and fundamentalist religions. If we are all paying to fund the BBC it is only fair that all sides of a subject are told.

well i happen to disagree with this for the sole reason that i think religion is wrong from the start. it's fine giving both sides of a point, but when one side of a point is blatently WRONG or if you like unproven then why the fuck should it be given the time of day?

if 99% of the country said they wanted to watch a program telling us about the existance of invisible pink unicorns i'd sure as hell be just as annoyed if it was shown when it's being paid for by me. sorry, but that's just where i stand.

I would be in favour of privatizing the BBC completely if it would be able to maintain its current level without funds from the British taxpayer. But that is different from the question if the BBC should be allowed to have various religions and world views their own programs. I'm all for equal representation, but unfortunately even with the BBC I don't see that. I'd love to see a good BBC documentary about Sikhism for instance, or Jainism, but I don't see that happen any time soon.

Do you think it would be possible to maintain the quality of the BBC whilst it also has to turn to commercial sources for its funding?

I don't see any precedence for that and believe that the reason it can and does produce the quality programming it does is due mostly to how it is funded. But yea, perhaps this is another topic?

The british taxpayer shouldn't have to be paying taxes for BBC to stay afloat. Who watches british television anyway?

Here in Oz,I watch a LOT of BBC programmes because most of them are superior to almost anything produced in the US.

But most of all, their documentaries and series have been awesome (some of them together with HBO).

I agree with you skipper that in order to do some of these programs, being dependent on advertisement is a cause for concern (biting the hand that feeds you and all that), and it is a very little known fact that some programs the BBC greenlighted were so expensive no commercial company would ever have invested in them. Only when these programs turn out to be a TV success, other channels get interested in them and do a knock-off version of it for half the budget.

My son LOVES 'Robot Wars'!!! So much . I'll have a word with him. He STILL watches it!

All of the comedy dvd's in my collection (except peep show (a Channel 4 production)) are either BBC (Mighty boosh, Alan partridge, 15 storeys high, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, The office, Allo' Allo', The thick of it, Only fools and Horses) or HBO (Flight of the conchords, curb your enthusiasm), HBO is an amazing American network, by the way.
