What's the oldest thing in your house?
February 4, 2026 at 1:13 pm
Just for fun.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

My wife owns a trilobite fossil, so that is at least 250 million years old.

I'm the fossil.
Actually, I have some fossils that a friend found in a hike and gave to me. Really, rocks with shells in them.

I have an anvil that reliably dates from the 1670s, but that’s in the shop, not the house. The oldest item in the living quarters is a brass flower vase from 1914.

Well played, Deesse! But if we’re gonna go that road, I have lots of iron about the place, so billions of years old.

Yeah, I've got a couple of ammonite shells fossilized in limestone, so anywhere from 60-350 million years old.
