Happy Easter Monday!
April 5, 2026 at 12:16 pm
This is the day (although not the date) that began the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916. 2500 rebels held out against 16 000 British troops for an amazing five days. Although the Rising ultimately failed (sixteen rebel leaders executed, hundreds imprisoned), it is considered to have been the opening salvo of the Irish revolutionary period, which culminated in independence for 26 of the island’s 32 counties.

Irish people are always rebelling against something because they are always on a lookout about their culture and nationality being hijacked by the English.
I remember reading in the autobiography of an Irish-American war journalist, Samantha Power, where she described a boy in Ireland being punished for merely kicking the ball in a way that protestant boys do: "The Irish nationalism around him was so intense that, if a boy in his school mistakenly used his head on the Gaelic football field (as one does in the “English” sport of soccer), the match would be suspended, and the ball confiscated. Rugby and soccer were seen as sports for Protestants and Anglophiles."
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

And yet Ireland seems to do fairly well in both sports. Not world beaters by any stretch, but not bad.
