Are Christians creepy?

My step brother was a christian and he used to try and preach to me. He wouldn't do it in an aggressive way, or forcefully, but he'd always talk about how he felt a 'connection' with god, and how he used to speak all the time to the local priest. Creepy enough.

Thankfully he came to the realisation he was being brainwashed and he now tells me how evil the church is for misleading it's followers.

Exactly, Cinjin. A sentiment captured perfectly by H. L. Mencken:

Quote:God is the immemorial refuge of the incompetent, the helpless, the miserable. They find not only sanctuary in His arms, but also a kind of superiority, soothing to their macerated egos: He will set them above their betters.

RE: Are Christians creepy?
I wouldn't call a Christian wanting to convert me necessarily creepy. It only gets creepy when they get that faraway look in their eyes when they're talking about being saved or whatever, like cult members who convince themselves that they're totally happy when they worship the cult leader. Or, it's the ones who claim that God talks to them who creep me out, not to mention the ones who claim to perform exorcisms.

But creepy? Not necessarily. Annoying as hell? Definitely.

There is a look of smugness that some christians have that is creepy.

So some christians are creepy and others arent.

My question to you tonight is, do you automatically think someone is creepy when they say they are a Christian, or is it just when they try to convert you? I myself am massively creeped out by the Bible Network and several real-life Christians I've met. I believe I mentioned earlier that it triggers my fight-or-flight reflex.

Follow up question, how would you react to someone "telling you about the Gospel" in a nice way? Is it always offensive/enraging/however it makes you feel? I know a lot of churches have Evangelism classes, but one of my favorite professors says they "teach people how to be socially inappropriate." What if someone took the time to get to know you, then tried to subtly bring up the Gospel a lot? More or less creepy?

This is really interesting for me, it usually produces good stories. I know I have a couple. Thanks in advance for replying!

I would have to admit that most of the time when christians try to "share the good news with me" I start to cringe and worry if the man is going to start getting loud at me if I tell him Im not interested. If my kids are with me I pull them closer to me, especially if they are talking about sacrifices, life after death, demons and devils, rising from the dead, etc.. It is very unnerving for my children because I have raised them to accept reality for what it is and when they see a full grown adult rambling on about "Jesus ascended to heaven in the clouds in glory to sit at the right hand of god"..well, my kids get nervous and creeped out.

So I would say that it really depends on what the christian says. If they say what I wrote about above, then hell yeah they are creepy and some even make me get into a defensive posture for fear of being attacked.

If a christian just comes up and says, as a quick example, something like; "I dont like porn, Im christian." Then I am cool with that. Hell I would be friendly and even cut some jokes with the man... I would say something like "Whats the point of having internet access then?". If a christian has a good sense of humor, then he/she is alright by me. I have met a few christians who are great talkers, and I didnt mind having a religious conversation with them and didnt feel creeped or defensive.

But on scale..the majority of christians either creep me out or piss me off or make me struggle not to laugh in their faces with some of the weird and stupid shit they say.

My standard for uncreepiness is more rigorous, and no one who believes he has a "personal relationship" with the "lord" or "jesus" is their "personal savior" has ever come close to passing.

I just got banned from worthychristianforums.com.

Yep. I didn't break any rules. I didn't curse. I didn't name call or throw insults. I simply replied to the thread: What would you ask God if you met him.

And my answer was:

God, why do you insist that your followers kill everyone that doesn't know you?

I of course sited several verses for examples - and was very quickly banned.
Interesting, I followed the rules to the letter and still got kicked out immediately, and yet those same assclowns can come on this site, break all the rules, and we will still allow them the courtesy to present their arguments for a considerable amount of time.

Christians are more annoying then creepy.
I do not think it is necessary to believe that the same God who has given us our senses, reason, and intelligence wished us to abandon their use, giving us by some other means the information that we could gain through them

Yeah the "personal relationship" thing always kinds of creeps me out, no matter who it is claiming it. Someone believing in an all-powerful creator of the universe I can handle, but when they start thinking that they're best friends with him then I get a little wierded out. Having a personal relationship with an imaginary friend means that you should probably seek a good psychotherapist. The Christians with a "personal relationship" seem to be the ones whose god always hates who/what they themselves hate.

Not automatically, no. Not even when they try to convert me. The "I love everybody Christians" that say hateful things in whispery, condescending tones creep me the fuck out. You know the ones that see themselves as all loving people, but who are actually psycho, hateful douchebags.

The only nice way I can imagine is if I ask to be told. That never happens and yet, I keep getting told.

It is annoying. I hate wasting time.

Eh, I'm neutral on that. Either way, it is annoying.
