Stupid Question That's Bothering Me
July 21, 2011 at 6:20 am
I will embarrass myself in point form.
- We're information processing heat machines
- We require energy or fluctuation in temperature
- We achieve this by consuming food and converting it into energy
- When we no longer do this, we die. Life ceases when the power source is cut off
- Ergo, there is no 'afterlife'
... What about ectotherm?

Basically, what are the mechanics of their death and how could one compare it to ours in the sense that I described?

I'm not sure what you're asking. In what way is a cold blooded creatures death similar to ours? Their lives also cease when the power source is cut off. Plants do the same.

A cold blooded creature still uses it's food to provide energy, so cut that off and they die. It's just they can't use their metabolism to regulate their body temperature. Crocodiles don't become immortal because they sunbathe to keep their body temperature up.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life.

Ok, sounds good. What I was asking, and poorly so I admit, was if there were any contradictions or issues with the idea that we're heat machines that process information who "cease to exist" when the heat/energy source is cut off as opposed to us being souls or spirits who survive physical death.

On the one hand there is a wealth of scientific observation and analysis to suggest that is indeed what we are, and as for the opposing view offered, well, where are you getting that from? What journal was that published in?

What journal was that published in? Oh, no, the opposing view is just a hypothetical argument that a theist or supernaturalist might respond with. I was having a conversation with my cousin (Buddhist) about the afterlife and, while explaining to her the naturalist view on human beings, distracted myself with possible contradictions to what I was saying about us being heat machines. I think I just unnecessarily confused myself.

Yes, confusion, the theists constant companion.

And some atheists too.
