Meh, herbicide doesn't work so well against berries anyway. They just grow again from root. Could go till/burn/till/dessicate.

Yep. It's a constant battle. As long as the roots survive, they come back - and the only thing that I've found effective on the roots is to pull the fuckers from the ground and burn or otherwise destroy them.
I wish I owned a piece of machinery versatile enough to shred 'em to the ground and till up the remains, while being nimble enough to navigate around the flora that I want to leave unmolested.
Alas, I have an aversion to debt so that empty space in my workshop is left unfilled.

As far as i can understand EVERY PLANT USED AS A FOOD CROP TODAY IS GMO'ED
As for Monsantos the GMO-ing of food crops to a specific fertiliser (produced by said company) with "kill switches" is reprehensible.
We have had here is Oz a group who decided that the obliteration of a test crop of GMO wheat (that would survive Aussie drought) should be wiped out because...the CSIRO are not be ethical??? Sorry WTF?? CSIRO develop a plant that performs in our drought ridden country and these 'do-goodies' kill it??
One thing is clear that our food sources are a priority...witness Asia buying up Aussie Farms to secure food for their population; ... so anything that can help should be funded and nurtured. imho

Ray Comfort's favorite sex toy is a prime example - the banana we think of today is an asexual product of human engineering for quite some time. Never mind the intelligent design crap - like corn (maize), it doesn't resemble a lot of its forebears.

I think the thing that people worry about most is the idea of putting animal genes into plant genetics, or at least that's what they shout about the most. A lot of the ones I've encountered don't have a particularly robust science background OR a good concept of what it's like to break your back trying to get food from the earth (and protect it from pests...and grow enough to feed your family...and keep it watered during droughts...)

It would probably be more startling if plants didn't already carry a ton of "animal genes" in the first place.

People and their concept of "we're special ...ergo ...we have 'special needs' like the delusion that our skydaddy has made 'everything distinct from everything else' ..." It really does scuttle the progress that GMO can make in feeding the world. *sigh

You're worried about genetic pollution as a result of production? So am I. It's one thing to worry, another to recommend that all the factories close their doors.
Genes do drift, not incredibly often, but they do. When they do, then what? Sterility. Any production methodology will have associated risks. These genes are only one part of BPM that include controlling pollen drift with barriers, minimum distances between strains..the list goes on and on.
At the end of the day, if I have to entirely exterminate some type of daisy somewhere to keep food on peoples tables, I'm gonna have to side with team us.

Now why do we need to know this stuff? Well, we've always had to deal with this. If we couldn't we would not have been able to breed our current crops.
Another thing that may have gone unconsidered here is the relatively small number of families involved in food production. It's alot easier to keep the pigs from breeding when you put them into a tank with whales.
