For awhile yes, you have to understand that even though I didn't believe I didn't consider myself an atheist at that point.

I was thinking about that this morning and I now realise that, in effect, I "came out" about 15 years ago when I got involved in debating fundamentalists on the net for the first time (I had debated/discussed it on CompuServe earlier but I wasn't heavily into it or militant) ... before that I would have classed myself as a "don't know".

That's fair enough. I only stopped believing a little over a year ago, and it was somewhat hard to suddenly give up beliefs and ideas that I'd held to be true for most of my life. This is the first place I've discussed any of this on the net Wink maybe this is my coming out.

Well it's good to witness it then. Glad to have you here Smile

Of course wherever you 'came out' it's still good. But it's good to have 'caught you' 'coming out' right here on this site Big Grin

I hadn't really came out until I told my parents a few years ago. The first person I told was my brother when I was 13. He was proud Smile lol

Thanks Big Grin

It's funny watching people's reactions when they find out. Most christians don't understand it, some are happy to believe as they do and let me believe as I do, and then some christians (like my mum) tell me I'm sinful, I'm going to hell, etc etc etc. And my sister was funny - she tried to figure out why I don't believe there is a god, but kept looking at it the wrong way and getting confused (she's only 15).

I feel so blessed (haha) that my parents are so open about it. I came out to my dad very casually and come to find out, hes an atheist too. He hasnt come out and said it but he is. My mom has expressed some disbelief also. So thats pretty awesome Big Grin

Pretty much everyone in my family knows, and I don't think my parents are particularly religious. I do have an uncle that is a believing Christian but he and I get along very well so no problems there either.

I love the irony lol

My brother is really the only one of my family members that's ok with it because he's an atheist too. My mom did the same thing as yours athoughtfulman. I think she is a big reason why my dad cares so much. He would be a lot more open-minded about it if she didn't have such a big fit over it.

But I DID make sure I came out after my grandmother died. She would have been so sad. For her sake I wish there was a heaven.

haha I think It's funny how we say "come out"
