When I was a middle manager, I made an effort to get to know my 50 staff.

I discovered that 15 thought I was an areshole and hoped I would get run over by a passing tank or spontaneously burst into flames. About 20 were indifferent. Three actually liked me and one very nice young thing had a crush on me. She was 17. I was 44. I would have felt like a complete cunt* AND a child molestor. Didn't get to the rest,thought it best not to know.


*plus to be honest: a 27 year age gap is probably too much. There was only 12 years between me and my ex-wife,Crune Punt,and see how fucking wonderfully THAT worked out!

ONE of my pet hates ANYWHERE is fucking name tags.


At work some genius in the sheltered workshop (SHQ) thought it would it would be just dandy if we ALL had to wear name tags, with first name only. So the genius got somebody to write a memo for him- and we all got name tags.--That meant some no necked,mono-browed neanderthal dragging its knuckles in from the street could address one with impertinent familiarity.

For some strange reason I kept losing mine or accidently leaving it at home.Took them about 3 months to give up trying to make me wear it, although I never once refused.

Our brand-new-broom-young- managers couldn't cope with intractable old pricks like me. So they gave us a lot of money and we all went away, 12 of us. I managed to retire four years earlier than I had planned, at age 51. I was so happy I damn near took a dump on the manager's desk.

Another genius,in Canberra thought it would be great if we all wore uniforms. He was sure we would be just thrilled to do so and pay for them ourselves. I declined. Take- up rate was about 10%; most of management and slimy suck-ups.

I'm very rude to people I don't know using my name in familiar ways, or calling me "Rach" like they're family or best friend/boyfriend status. It gets nasty. Especially when sales people do it. Then I bring all my dad's horrible solicitor remedies to the front, and my dad's an awful human being.

Yeah, I didn't like that either. I preferred writing things about myself on an index card instead of saying them in front of the whole class.

But doing this in a forum feels different because no one really knows me.
Also, I'm just typing all the information onto a screen instead of speaking. So that's why this is a little easier for me.

Nah, it's not even talking about myself in public that bothers me - in school right now, which is mostly made up of working adults taking night courses, ranging from me (usually youngest at 26) to 60 year olds, the teachers do stupid shit where we have to introduce ourselves and do team building stuff because we "have to learn how to get along with people in the world". We're not fucking 7 years old anymore - if we're out working in the real world and taking night courses, it's almost guaranteed we've learned SOMETHING about how to be nice and play well in the same sandbox as others. It's such a waste of class time and none of those students give a shit about each other. We just want to get our stuff done. My plant ID class has given me the most interaction I've ever had with fellow students, and that's just because there's only 7 people and the older lady took a shine to me for being pleasant, one of the 40 year olds gets coffee at the school cafe with me, and the one Min's age is just a perv. Those are a good example of a working student's priorities!!! And it doesn't matter in regular school either - inevitably, people forgot who everyone else was and developed friends naturally or stuck with their own cliques! So much for fostering "getting along." If you haven't developed it by kindgergarden, you might have some serious issues that a regular teacher can't help with.

Honestly, I think they do it because they're no more ready to start school days and school years than we were/are.
