Best Compliments

"My eyes are brown"
"Your eyes, are like a crystal clear pool of... ummm... errrrr...... mud?"

Not one specific to me but I remember hearing this somewhere and I couldn't help but burst out laughing.

One girlfriend told me I have a cute bum. Another told me I have wicked eyes.


Early 1975, I was talking to my next door neighbour,who happened to be a friend and a clinical psychologist.

I told him that I had the chance to go to university as a mature age student.I said I was not going to apply as I didn't think I was smart enough.
His response ;"mate,you'll shit it in" (Aussie expression for 'effortless')


I got in,and earned my degree,with straight A's. I began to tell myself that I might not be as stupid as I had always thought. That compliment helped me change my life.

This year: A lawyer friend told me I'm the most intellectually stimulating person she knows --or it might have been "challenged"

That, and I think this one ranks quite highly.

I've heard all sorts of compliments for my physical appearance, but I am never really impressed with those. My favorite compliments are based upon my inner qualities.

I agree. It's of course nice to get the occasional: "You look pretty/beatiful", but my favorite compliment ever was from my smartest friend, who said that I would pass Mensa's test. That really stroked my ego!

The best are the kind that not only make you feel beautiful, but desired, and not only desired, but cherished.

My mother was a huge contributing factor in all that, oddly enough. All body issues, I leave on her door step, with a few here and there sacrificed to my ex.

But I had to write in again, because I was reminded of something a (at the time) complete stranger said that made me pause, wrinkle my face, and then burst into peals of laughter. So, best compliment I've ever gotten from a stranger:

Your avatar just drips "nerdy librarian kosher sauce" all over the board and I have a big bag of biscuits ready to sop that geek gravy up.

I always get really self-concious and awkward if someone comments on my looks

On the other hand I have been told by many people that I'm clever, but since most of them have been stupider than me (or perhaps I should say that they didn't spend as much time thinking as me ), I always thought that it was obvious that I should appear smart to them. The compliment I got from my friend means so much to me, because he is really, really smart, so his opinion matters more to me than the rest

When I play music at a wedding, getting a testimonial from the couple afterwards can be very touching. It's good to know you've helped make the most important day of somebody's life a little better.

On a more personal note, I don't know if I can think of any particular examples. Certainly none as poetic as summer's. I'll keep thinking. I'm sure I've had plenty of fairly superficial ones that wouldn't particularly stand out in a thread like this.

Compliments do nothing for me... I am aware of who I am and my capabilities.
It may sound a bit arrogant, but oh well... It is the same when someone criticises me, I am never bothered. I usually know if they are wrong or not.

Like if I'm playing a gig and people compliment me after my set, I don't care what they think... I play for myself. I play because I love doing it, not to please others.
