That is not an excuse, just an observed fact.

And if 'all that could be "easily" invented without war', then why wasn't it?
I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.

RE: War
Rev. Jer. got it right, war includes defending yourself. War is an armed conflict between two factions, which means most of the time one is the aggressor and one is the defender. I oppose the former but support the latter.

Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Really? Many of the founding fathers of science invented many new things, during times of peace, and many things they invented they didnt even know what good they were for, and they deffinitely didnt get any profit from them.... yet, they were still invented.

and your post leads to this one...

Quote:I disagree, and so does history.

seeing that, historically, America has seen about 3 dozen years of peace throughout its entire existence, while the rest of that time we have been in some sort of war, altercation, millitary action, or what not... I would very much like to see where you got your numbers from.

From what I see, many things would have been invented regardless of wether we were in war or not...but neither you or I can prove that when it comes to america, as america is almost CONSTANTLY at war.

Switzerland hasnt been in wars for a great long time...look at this list of famous inventors:

All done during peacetime from a peaceful country...it is also one of the richest countries in the world.

RE: War
An excerpt from Bertrand Russell's "Why Men Fight:"

Any man with
any force in him would rather live in this world,
with all its ghastly horrors, than in Plato's Re-
public or among Swift's Houyhnhnms. The
men who make Utopias proceed upon a radi-
cally false assumption as to what constitutes a
good life. They conceive that it is possible to
imagine a certain state of society and a certain
way of life which should be once for all recog-
nized as good, and should then continue for ever
and ever. They do not realize that much the
greater part of a man's happiness depends upon
activity, and only a very small remnant con-
sists in passive enjoyment. Even the pleas-
ures which do consist in enjoyment are only
satisfactory, to most men, when they come in
the intervals of activity. Social reformers, like
inventors of Utopias, are apt to forget this very
obvious fact of human nature. They aim
rather at securing more leisure, and more op-
portunity for enjoying it, than at making work
itself more satisfactory, more consonant with
impulse, and a better outlet for creativeness and
the desire to employ one's faculties. Work, in
the modern world, is, to almost all who depend .
on earnings, mere work, not an embodiment of
the desire for activity. Probably this is to a
considerable extent inevitable. But in so far
as it can be prevented something will be done
to give a peaceful outlet to some of the im-
pulses which lead to war.

It would, of course, be easy to bring about
peace if there were no vigor in the world. The
Roman Empire was pacific and unproductive;
the Athens of Pericles was the most productive
and almost the most warlike community known
to history. The only form of production in
which our own age excels is science, and in
science Germany, the most warlike of Great
Powers, is supreme. It is useless to multiply
examples; but it is plain that the very same
vital energy which produces all that is best also '
produces war and the love of war. This is the
basis of the opposition to pacifism felt by many
men whose aims and activities are by no means
brutal. Pacifism, in practice, too often ex-
presses merely lack of force, not the refusal to
use force in thwarting others. Pacifism, if it is
to be both victorious and beneficent, must find
an outlet, compatible with humane feeling, for
the vigor which now leads nations into war and
destruction.

well, its just one quick list. If you wish for me to pull up more, I will be more than happy to.

what it has with the price of bread is that this country is able to invent and produce and become one of the richest countries in the world WITHOUT forcing itself on other countries.

RE: War
It should be kept in mind that Switzerland is not a country that was ever likely to command any major overseas war effort due simply to location, size and population. It is as likely as not that Switzerland recognized this and took the direction it did out of these expediencies. Beyond this, it is also as unlikely that neutrality somehow generates more inventors and inventions than other more martial positions:

so mankind, in your opinion, needs a gun at its head to be creative and useful?

Please correct me if I got that wrong.
