So, I want to learn how to not fluff-post

This is going to be a really hard thing for me to learn to do, but I just noticed a pinned thread about nettiquette in here and it said that people should avoid fluff-posting. I want to learn how to not do this. The forums I've been to in the past, I've done this. I want to contribute so it comes out as one or two liners or in very small succinct paragraphs.

There are many fluff-posts here and there but this hasn't become a problem for us so far.

Personally, I think that fluff-posting is not a problem if you want to say "Thank you for sharing that" or "I agree with you" or "Thanks for helping me" or something along those lines. I don't see anything wrong with that. Even if a post doesn't add anything to the discussion, it doesn't harm anyone to let others know what you think (or what you feel) by saying those things. However, you can also give kudos to a post if you want to show others that you agree with that post or that you like that post, if you don't want to fluff-post.

I think fluff-posting only becomes an issue if you do it too much in a single thread and it turns into a rolling spam (in which you and other members are discussing something off-topic) with just a few words in such a way that it starts sounding like you're Instant Messaging each other.

Nonetheless, the mods are very lax about fluff-posting. It's okay if you do it sometimes, and I have done it also, but don't do it too much in a short span of time. That's all.

I'd like to be able to learn enough to be able to tell the difference between the two. Sometimes I think I can, but other times I don't think I know enough to be able to tell the difference. It's an important skill to learn because if you don't, then you might end up taking what people say at face-value instead of being able to assess it for what it really is.

I hope that makes sense.

People here are really smart, I like that.

If you find something interesting, doing a little fact checking should help with that, or asking for their sources. You'll catch on quickly enough.

(I'm one of the most guilty fluff posters...but humor is appreciated just about anywhere!)

I think that one fits there also.
But, we don't do anything about it unless you are explicitly breaking the rules.

We had a time back then of bad fluff posting, where people posted to boost their post count whilst saying nothing. It was annoying as threads weren't just derailed, but trashed. The recent battle between Sae (Lilly Fart Bottom ) and Rhythm didn't do the same, as they both made readable posts.

So I think the rule really means: post if you have a point. We forgive the odd transgression.

That's like... so last month.

I'm still astounded at my defeat. I'll have to deal with it eventually, for now I'll just keep dazedly pretending I accept it happened
