You said 0.3r isn't a third because 0.3 multiplied by 3 is 0.9, not 1.0 But I said 0.3r not 0.3... It denotes an infinite string of 3s on the end in the case of 0.3, and an infinite string of 9s in the case of 0.9, not the same as simply 0.3 or 0.9. (October 15, 2009 at 7:35 pm)fr0d0 Wrote: 0.3r is not one third, because multiplied by 3 it equals 0.9... & not 1 That's fallacious reasoning you see. Because 0.3r is not the same number as 0.3. 0.3 X 3 is indeed 0.9...but 0.3r is not. 0.3r= 0.33333333333333333333333.... so is of course not the same as simply 0.3 EvF
EvF,
I don't know if Fr0d0 went back and edited them (I don't think so because I remember seeing elipses "..." where he claims they have always been) but he always has the elipses in the right place. Rhizo RE: [split] 0.999... equals 1

No I didn't! I said 0.3r x 3 not 0.3 x 3!
Go read it! (ahem - what he said ^^ )
I directly quoted what you said fr0d0. That's what you said. Now perhaps you can explain what you mean, perhaps not - it's up to you.
You said exactly this : fr0d0 Wrote:0.3r is not one third, because multiplied by 3 it equals 0.9... & not 1 post #148, this thread. EvF
*Rhizo's mind implodes as the universe is unmade in a vacuum of WTF*
Rhizo Rhiz Rhi Rh R * Poit!
here you go then, if this is what you are referring to:
Me: "0.3r is not one third, because multiplied by 3 it equals 0.9... & not 1" 0.3r ..meaning 0.3 reoccurring 0.9... ..meaning 0.9 reoccurring You missed the "..." off the end of 0.9 which doesn't make sense in the sum - but it was your misquote that made the sum wrong, my post was correct.
I don't see where I missed anything in any of my posts on this matter here. But I do see where I missed the fact that by 0.3... you meant 0.3r, and I missed that you meant that.
So you are asking how 0.3r=1 third? Because 0.9r=1 because there can be no gap between it and 1 so it must be the same number...and so 1 third of it is 0.3r, and so 0.3r=1 third (of 1). EvF |
