That's a given.  What about, though, what were they promised?

In a nutshell:

1) The UK would regain control of its borders, meaning that EU citizens can no longer simply come to the UK and live / work without needing a visa. On the other hand, UK citizens have now lost the right to live / work in all EU countries too. Many "leave" supporters think that immigration from the EU is a massive problem and needs to be stopped.

2) The UK would no longer have to follow EU regulations for trade. Internally this means more freedom for business owners, however the UK will have to renegotiate 40 years worth of trade agreements. In order to continue trading with EU countries as well, its likely that they will have to follow EU regulations anyway.

3) The UK will not have to follow any EU laws. It's a bit like a US state seceding, where they keep their state laws but no longer have to follow federal laws.

From what?  You're still going to have to comply with their laws to do business with them, right?

Well OFC -we- wont...especially when we have you at a disadvantage.  We'd stand to gain more by putting you at the -front-...with usory terms. Don't look so surprised, you're talking about the Evil Empire...and we have a thing for screwing with our client states and surrogates. Wink

It's isolation, not independence.

From the Guardian. Entirely expected - and predicted, I may add.

It's difficult for me to see this as isolation even...the UK has just exposed itself to privation from not only those same "foreign powers" it sought to escape..but new ones (or familiar old ones, however you like it) that it's inclusion in the EU shielded it from.

And with the City of London being one of the major financial markets, the shockwave has the potential to hit all of us, around the globe. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show. 2008 2.0 is coming up.

Yeah, and it's not like we're a major colonial power any more. I'm ignorant there - I don't know if we have or how many colonies we have left that haven't declared independence... but I'd guess not many if any. Our heyday has been and gone in that regard and now, thanks to this, it's basically just us alone Sad

We might take an economic hit at first, but it'll get better.

So, exactly the Trump phenomenon. The "We're #1", the "We never win anymore," the "Make [Britain] Great Again," bullshit. It's all about pride with no look to the future.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I'm worried that a global recession, or even just a couple month dip, will play into Trump's hands here. Seems like the perfect way for him to go "See? Britain followed socialist practices for years, and it left them unable to handle leaving the EU in a way which wouldn't hurt them. Breaking away was the right move, but we're seeing how much damage the socialist agenda can cause. We can't let that happen here."
