Actually, I don't think he did - and he was stating an opinion, but it's the same one that I hold at the heart of it - its your personal choice whether or not you're going to follow "foolishness," but it doesn't make you crazy or stupid.

My father is highly intelligent, but his belief in organic woo doesn't make him crazy or stupid by any means.
Honestly, I think a better OP question would have been "why do certain fundamentalist groups continue to enforce purposeful ignorance?"

Its true people who are highly intelligent can possess completely wild and unsubstantiated beliefs so stupid is probably the wrong word, but they are most definitely crazy.

Anyone who believes the world was created in 6 days, is 6000 years ago, and that stories like Noah's Ark and Adam and the Garden of Eden are true is certainly crazy.

[sigh]

I suppose it depends on context.

The compulsion to label all Christians as stupid, ignorant, or delusional sounds stupid, ignorant and delusional to me. But maybe that's because I'm stupid, ignorant and delusional. The question sounds very patronizing to me. Sorta like when a believer says "I used to be an atheist" in the tone that suggests he's seen the light. Nobody knows everything, so everyone is ignorant to a greater or lesser degree. As for delusional I'll have to check and make sure I've been taking my meds.

You know... at this point, anyone who ignores the mountains and mountains of reality that science is giving us each week in order to keep the idea that christianity somehow might be true truly is holding on to a delusion. There's no way to rationalize belief beyond ignoring the stupidity that is christian "faith." Every day science gives us a new amazing truth about the world, while christianity continues to fail. Aside from the utter ignorance it must take to believe in such a stupid idea, it takes a truly deranged mind to disregard the constant flow of truth given to use by science.

Most Christians are ignorant of the true extent of their religion's bloody history. They may know of a few past and current abuses but they don't realize it's inherent, self-destructive methodology. They are duped by centuries-old fear propaganda and new age spiritual advertising. When someone mentions the Inquisition or some abhorrant piece of scripture, they so readily pass it off as irrelevant for some insane reason. Their faith in God is so vague and undefined and entirely emotional. People want spirituality, and Christian churches are the extreme in monopolizing faith. It is also a peer pressure/"wanting to fit in" mentality. I think many Christians who go to church every week secretly doubt and criticize the whole game, but still attend for social pretense of great morality and "saintliness", which is a complete hypocrisy. Christians are hypocrites because they want to put up a front, or an image of piety, but it is all in vain. They are consciously decieving themselves to hide from the pain and uncertainty of their lonely existence. They find some comfort in believing what so many others believe. They don't truly investigate any of it but assume it is at least good and beneficial to be a Christian. But in reality, it is an ancient conspiracy to separate humanity from his own self worth and dignity by saying that only Jesus is divine and great as the son of God, and we are just pitiable sinners. Old World political propaganda to control the masses that unbelievably still works to this day.

As you were ignorant of your own. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Smile
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Christianity gave you your science by promoting the idea that a God of order and universal truth would create a logical and understandable creation instead of an arbitrary and capricious one. You can argue that it has served its purpose and we've moved on since, but a hat tip would be nice.

There is always going be ignorance in my mind until I become enlightened, if ever.

I looked into the Dalai Lama's "feudal theocracy" and found out that this term is primarily used as a political excuse for Communist China to invade and occupy Tibet. Most Tibetans undeniably prefer having His Holiness as their "God King" rather than the oppression, torture and abuses the Chinese soldiers are commiting in that culturally rich and majestic region of the Himalayas. It is a travesty of human rights abuses to know Chinese military are controlling these humble people while some of the propagandist media twist the truth and make the great, kind and compassionate Dalai Lama appear to be the bad guy. Yet sadly this is also very similar to the U.S. occupation of the Middle East. American soldiers are forced to break down doors of innocent Afghan civilians and disrupt the whole country's freedom and soveriegnty. Modern War always has one purpose: corporate gains and manipulation. All other reasons are outright false or completely relative.

Oh, goodness, another ":christianity gave us science" diatribe. Unimpressive, and incorrect. The pagans christians encountered had a better handle on science then (and now, despite there being none left).

Bgood, no, that term is primarily used to describe something called a feudal theocracy. The Chinese have attempted to use Tibet's past as a feudal theocracy as an excuse for what they already wished to do (and would have likely done anyway). Who faithful Tibetans preferred turning the screw hardly concerns me. I'd prefer that no one turned the screw. Try again.
