Why people love Rick Santorum: Discussion

RE: Why people love Rick Santorum: Discussion
Thats probably because Herr Vonpopenfuhrer is a centre lefty. Strangely he believes in health care, no wars etc. In between the homophobia, he does say some useful stuffabd Santorum, being Opus Dei, is the opposite. But as has ben pointed out, even catholics hate him.

Santorum is about as trustworthy as a bear trap hidden under a pile of leaves.
'The difference between a Miracle and a Fact is exactly the difference between a mermaid and seal. It could not be expressed better.'
-- Samuel "Mark Twain" Clemens

"I think that in the discussion of natural problems we ought to begin not with the scriptures, but with experiments, demonstrations, and observations".

- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

"In short, Meyer has shown that his first disastrous book was not a fluke: he is capable of going into any field in which he has no training or research experience and botching it just as badly as he did molecular biology. As I've written before, if you are a complete amateur and don't understand a subject, don't demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect by writing a book about it and proving your ignorance to everyone else! "

Surely it's worse if he actually believes the stuff he's saying? He's more likely to put it into action then.

I was wondering why people love Rick Santorum so much (I have lots of fundy friends and family who love the guy). I thought they loved him because of the way he was branded and advertised but my mom had an interesting take on the subject. She thinks it's because he is sincere and honest. He honestly believes the crazy crap he spews out, and it shows.

I thought about it and I think she might be right. Rick Santorum can look straight at a camera or at an interviewer, say something, and not have any body motions that betray what he really believes (most of the time). He comes across as genuine and honest. Someone you can trust.

Populists always seem to the uneducated mind as "honest".
I rather see honesty in work, not in word.
Does this Rick guy avoid tax? Does this Rick guy swindle his business partners? Was he ever prosecuted on more serious charges than a parking ticket?
Only then I look if my ideology and his ideolgy matches.

I'm not convinced education has much to do with it,in the same way many well educated and and highly intelligent people are very religious, not just the ignorant and/or stupid. I think it's more a matter of credulity and perhaps desperation and seeing what you want to see. Thinking

The educated people support populists to fill their own pockets.
Those who support populists with only simple answers on why they support them are generally the not well educated, and sadly ignorant.
Besides, I'm not insulting people's intelligence. People might be very intelligent, but still sadly ignorant about the world around them.

The motivation is a strawman. Your sweeping, elitist generalisation was that [only/mainly] the uneducated support popularists ,without equivocation.

As a species ALL human beings are motivated by self interest above all else.

Plus, 'educated' is relative. What do YOU mean by 'educated' ? For many it means 'literate' ,for others it means having finished high school, for others a university degree. For me it means being literate, widely read, insatiably curious, having some ability in rational thinking, and the awareness that learning never ends. Formal education does not make a person 'educated' if that person has not learned to think and to question..

I think I have seen enough examples to state that I think my "generalisation" is true.
What I mean by educated is, a person that knows the exact circumstances regarding politicians, their history, their archivements, and so on. And their policies regarding the future of the country. I know quite a lot of people who are *educated*, like, they know how to take a triple integral, but they don't know half about our own country, let alone the rest of the world, than my father who didn't even finish high school.
But I can also state, that the same people I've mentioned above generally self-identify as social democrats(they use this interchangeably with the word *Kemalist* sometimes, a rather wrong word for whatever ideology they think they adhere to).

I would argue that I, and many atheists here, are the evidence against such a statement. I.E. simultaneously intelligent and/or educated, as well as possessed of knowledge of their government.
