Oh yeah, you guys do have a lot of people. Must be crowded over there. Us Americans like to have breathing space. I don't see how having a larger population is something to brag about. There are too many people as it is.

Fuck yeah! We show you how to make. You build cheap, cheap.

No I'm not. But I will happily look at any resource you can provide me saying I am wrong.

I'm not going to argue about who shows who. Fact is we build it, we build anything for any price and quality.

Landmass problem

Well I suppose if you include Alaska we're almost the same size.

According to the notes on that first link the ranking is disputed due to conflicting information. So I'll agree to a draw on it.

Actually the States has much better landmass than China with much more natural resources like water etc. China is very hilly all over and the landmass is ridden with landslides and earthquakes.

China's economy is seriously growing at an enormous rate and I've personally seen whole cities go up in almost no time. The Chinese built whole cities and there aren't even people to occupy them yet.

Look the states has done things on a very bid scale, if seen it, I was in the states doing a Engineering project fr South Africa about 15 years ago but I've never seen what the Chinese do in some places and especially how they do it. Utterly strange.

I like how you merged British inventions and American inventions in the same list. Is that an example of that "special relationship" I keep hearing about? Smile

Notably (for Scots) John Logie Baird and Alexander Graham Bell provide credit to Scotland for the invention of the television and telephone.

Airplanes is an interesting one, too. The Wright Brothers didn't exactly invent flying. There were a lot of eccentrics, crackpots and pioneers around the world who were perfecting various types of flying machine. The Wright Brothers managed the longest recorded flight, winning them credit for the biggest success. It doesn't make it an invention, though.

I was curious about the claim for the combustion engine, too, and a look at Wikipedia confirms my suspicions. Which American in this list were you referring to?

And computers. I've always known Babbage as the "father of computing".

And I suppose you won't believe that the Chinese were the ones who invented golf and played it ages before it blew over to Europe!

How do you get to be so wrong, so consistently? It truly is a gift.

Most things deemed "Scottish" came from other countries. From memory, the bagpipes came from Turkey. Golf (or a variety of the game) may well have originated in China. That isn't the same thing as saying that it was then exported to Scotland. Unless you have evidence for that? What is today known as golf has a long history here. It is considered the home of the game, because the rules and regulations were formulated here. Much as the rules and regulations of football were done in England. Which isn't the same thing as saying that the game was invented there.

In South America, one of the ancient civilisations had a cool version of the game, where someone's head was aimed through loops in the wall of a court. And by "cool" I mean for the players... not the guy who lost his head.

But anyway. Tongue

I was refering to inventions from the "Western World". (Pst. I'm talking to a guy from China, Red Celt.) Not a country. Euro-American inventions.

But babbage? Pbbhtt. It all depends on how you define what a "computer" is. But the US invented the Microprocessor, so we win. Internet too.

And the Wright brothers? Talk to the 'pedia.

Quote:The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who were credited[1][2][3] with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. From 1905 to 1907, the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.

The internet. Funded by American tax payers. Libertarians should refuse to use the internet, seeing as how they want the smallest possible government, with next-to-nil taxation. Silly me... take, take, take without the give, give, give.

Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'm a fan of high taxation.

Still, the WWW came from a Brit.

And oh yeah, I really wasn't trying to take anything away from the Wright Brothers. They deserve all the credit due to them. I was just saying that they were ahead of a large crowd... and it was more about innovation than invention - and getting the combination of elements right before anyone else.
