Yes; it is the largest religious event in world,with numbers regularly exceeding three million. It's considered a great blessing to die during Hajj,as you'd expect..(I wonder if being born there counts as having made the hajj?)

I hope he survives too, be fascinating to hear a first hand account.. The hajj is a huge deal for Muslims. There is no Christian equivalent..Non Muslims are forbidden on pain of death.(really).The hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Every Muslim is expected to make the effort at least once in lifetime. One can only imagine the hardship that must have entailed as recently as 100 years ago. Still would be the case for people from third world countries.They arrive at Mecca with nothing but the clothes on their back.They are cared for by wealthier Muslims as another of the Five Pillars, alms giving. (Muslims are obliged to give not less than 2.5% of their income to charity) Millions of people are fed free.

Of course the really wealthy Muslims stay at one of the many the six star hotels in Mecca.

'My' Malay village consisted poor fishermen a few rice farmers. There was one person in the village who had made the pilgrimage. He was revered and addressed as 'Tuan Hajj'. (common adult male honorific is 'inche' (mr) 'tuan' means 'lord'.)

I hope its sarcasm. The BBC had an article (curse my poor linking skills), where an Iranian girl was sentenced to death by a Sharia court and hung for the crime of BEING RAPED.

In Iran and other countries that follow Sharia, the rights of women are severely curtailed. This means that women can not go out without a male chaperone, (even its its just a male child), Cant go to school. Are forced to cover up in ridiculous ways and are generally treated as second class citizens.

Islam may have its good points but its treatment of women isnt one of them.
