Global temperatures since 1950

RE: Global temperatures since 1950
I was a denier for a long time (my parents are environmental hobbyists, so sometimes that can get irritating), but I've suffered in two 106F (42C) heatwaves in two years. One in Riverside, Ca., and the other in Indy of all places. Something seems to be happening.

Global warming is probably not the best term, as the cooling that is happening in places seems to relate to the heatwaves.

Agree with the"Global Warming" catch phrase as probably not the best term. I understand that the planet is coming out of a cooling trend and clearly into a warming trend as has happened in the past.

Wow, look at that. The world is increasingly registering republican.

RE: Global temperatures since 1950
I heard Newt Gingrich recently say [not verbatim] How can you possibly know the right temperature? isn't that up to opinion?...Which is asinine on so many levels...the most obvious being; if we don't have the right temperature, the oceans will turn acidic from overheating, or the plant life dies out and the animals go extinct because they can't just up and move like we can. People, if you can call him a human being, like Gingrich are the kind of people running the U.S. and this is why there's so many idiotic deniers of Demonstrable Science. The denial mostly stems from blowhard creationists who sincerely don't give a damn about the planet who spread misinformation and lies about the truth of what's happening in nature. It's worse than treason if you ask me.
If the hypothetical idea of an afterlife means more to you than the objectively true reality we all share, then you deserve no respect.

I'm in the military, so I'm up to my neck in a sea of douchy deniers. (Living in Texas doesn't help either.)

RE: Global temperatures since 1950
When I was 11-12 years old ( c. 1961) my brother and I used to play hockey on Lake Ronkonkoma, NY every winter. The largest lake in the county ( you can wiki it) it would freeze solid and hundreds of people would be skating on it and there were even some ice boats whipping across under sail.

Fast forward 30 years. My son turned 12 in 1991. He never skated on the lake. It did not freeze solid enough to allow it.

That is in the span of one life time.

We used to get storms driving west to east across the country. If it was snowing in Chicago we knew we'd be off from school the next day because the storm was heading our way. Now, the jet stream has shifted so that NY gets storms heading up the coast from the south which result in what are called Nor'easters which can take two days to pass and make everyone's life miserable in the process. My son is still in NY. He hates it.

This is climate change.

What was the excuse for climate change before humans came along?

RE: Global temperatures since 1950

I believe the currently popular term is "anthropocentric globabl warming" which places the emphasis on global changes caused by human activity. It's important to specify anthropocentric change because there are factors involved in climate change that have nothing to do with human activity, and there are natural trends which may run counter to AGW trends, thus obscuring the existence of AGW. I attended a talk on AGW, and if I recall correctly, only about half of the change in global temperature is attributable to man-made causes, so you really need to separate out the human causes from the natural ones.

As to people changing the terminology, or there being some fraud found in the work of AGW scientists, I don't see how that is anything but an ad hominem attack: some AGW science is bad, therefore all of it is suspect. It's a non sequitur.

It is difficult to separate the good science from the manipulated science as reported in the news media
