Did you have nuns as teachers? I found that most were either VERY nice and tolerable or they were out for blood. I can't even count the number of detentions I got for not wearing the proper socks or painting my nails or, GOD FORBID, rolling my skirt up past my knees... I was crazy back then

Yes, a few. But they were street clothesed. I'd agree. Not too much middle ground. Priests, too, IIRC.
My parents made sure that I complied with dress code., It was blue or gold slacks and a pastel-colored button up shirt (pink, yellow, white, or blue). I always had trouble tucking in, because of how I walk. Also, my shaving wad kind of negligent. Only ever got some nagging, though.
