No one needs God they just think they do. Believers have been getting along with out God all their lives, they just don't know it.

I think there are a variety of reasons why some people feel the need to have a god in their life. It's comforting to some to think there is an authority figure watching over them that cares about them. Some people don't like not having all the answers, and so "god" is a great answer for all the unknowables (like where did the universe come from?). For others, believing in god makes them part of the popular group, makes them feel superior to others. I don't think any of these people really need god, they just haven't figured out how to live without one.
