You think it had to do with the wellbeing of the child/society rather than certainty of genetic lineage/quality of product -for the buyer of said girl?

My wife was a virgin when we got married, and the first couple weeks were like uncorking a well-shaken champagne bottle--sploosh! 13 years in, and we are still going at it like bunny rabbits.

LOL, you don't, unless your society creates such a stigma and environment that punishes those who don't. Creating the problem and then selling the cure. Common enough. More thoroughly, your "father figure" not only "doesn't have to be"-if you have one- it doesn't have to be your father, it doesn't have to be a man, it doesn't have to be married to your mother (who doesn't have to be your mother, yadda yadda yadda...same qualifiers apply really).

What is a father figure?
I never had a conversation with my father even though we live at same house.
At least he doesn't hit me for stupid reasons

A father's job seems to be paying the bills, and making sure you don't stop listening to your mother. At least that's what I get from my dad.

Ideally, it's a man with enough good qualities that he becomes a sort of standard by which to judge masculinity. The problems of such a thing ought to be apparent. More commonly, it's an example of an average human being (completely gender neutral) with a range of flaws and virtues wholly unremarkable and within a few deviations from the mean upon which a whole host of mythmaking is foisted.

My mom would hit me too. At least a couple of times she slapped me in the face, which is something my dad never did.
Actually another thing is when my dad gave me lessons on building and fixing stuff, so I guess a father would teach his kid about traditional fatherly roles. Not that a woman can't build a house or fix a car.
