Watch the vid about televangelists it's funny but also sad. I find it so hard to believe anyone would put their faith in those snake oil salesmen, asking for private jets. incredible.

They ask for some pretty ballsy stuff.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

My former Church had started preaching something like the prosperity gospel when I stopped going. I think at some point, long ago the Church fabricated their version of tithing. In the OT (the only place it's defined) it's a tithe of food, applies to the food producers and traders only, the people of Israel only (Jews), was to be eaten by the tither, the poor and sometimes Levites.
I'd wager most preachers aren't Levites. Tithing is %60-80 fabricated if the Bible itself weren't %100 fabricated. A lot of Christians don't care much for welfare but they don't mind giving their money to a Church that isn't giving them a useful service. It makes them feel better about all the bad shit they think they do. I don't know why they don't just buy an ounce of dro like a normal human being..but hey, different strokes and all that.
Intangible goods and services is a great racket. The overhead is low and the customers aren't very demanding. You can make just about anything worth more by adding the intangible. A 5cent printout becomes a "prayer mat". A string of mardi gras beads, blessed, becomes somehow holy; uttering a cantrip over a cracker justifies a yearly salary.......etc etc etc.

I sometimes think in one sense this could be a modern American version of potlatch.
