the word evil in the hebrew has several different meaning. It is a literal catch phrase that is used to describe anything bad undesirable or unwanted.

Here is the general definition:רַע raʻ, rah; from H7489; bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral):—adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, displease(-ure), distress, evil((-favouredness), man, thing), +exceedingly, × great, grief(-vous), harm, heavy, hurt(-ful), ill (favoured), + mark, mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty), noisome, + not please, sad(-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), worse(-st), wretchedness, wrong. (Including feminine raaah; as adjective or noun.)

here is the definition in context:
†1. evil, distress, adversity: יָרֵא רַע fear evil Psalm 23:4Zephaniah 3:15בּוֺרֵא רָ֑ע Isaiah 45:7 (of God), הביא רע

While evil is a possible translation, the context supports the idea of calamity as in god is bringing the pain/He will do whatever it takes to crush the enemy of his servant Cyrus whom God is fully supporting. That he is willing to rain down evil and or calamity to the nations that stand in opposition to his servant Cyrus.

Most people get hung up on the do's and don't of sin. while they are a major component of sin, the whole point of sin itself is to provide Choice. If sin is anything outside the expressed will of God then that essentially makes sin the choice to be, or rather stay outside of the will of God. Which makes you a servant to sin and satan.

That's why All sin is the same to God or rather meets the same end. as it all boils down to, do you choose to serve God and righteousness? or Sin and satan?
Obviously not a Catholic where not all sins are created equal.  Neither are the punishments the same for all.  And you can pray away your sins.  The Etch-a-Sketch method of having a clean slate.  Say five Hail Marys, an Our Father, and The Act of Contrition.  See ya next week.

No not a catholic. I've been to many different churches/denominations currently my wife and I are members of a local baptist church even though my Christian views are not define by baptist doctrine. they do good work in our little rual community and I want to support them any way I can.

I say all sins are the same because all sins meet the same fate which The Apostle Paul says is death. Meaning destruction in Hell. Biblically speaking, there is only one way to atone for this sin and that is through accepting Christ.

all due respect to any catholic here, I'm just pointing out the differences between what the Bible says and what their religious beliefs are. Most religions differ between what the Bible says and their core doctrine. these differences don't make them any less christian though.

So there really isn't a sure thing.  It depends on the flavor of your particular church group.  If there are endless translations from the same book, it's difficult to say that one is the REAL thing.

Part of the reason I don't follow any.  If everyone who claims to be Christian had the same story...maybe it would be worth looking into.

I’m not sure that a god who creates adversity, affliction, calamity, displeasure, distress, grief, harm, hurt, mischief, sorrow, misery, trouble, wretchedness and wrong really helps your case.

I can see how that is a problem if you think god is all loving/loves everyone equally..  I can see how this would not generally be considered a plus or attribute of God. The truth of the matter is God can be down right vengeful and spiteful. especially to those who do not belong to Him. This is indeed a good example of this. that said the p[assage does not imply god puts evil in the heart of men. But rather is raining evil down on those who oppose his servant Cyrus. If you think this is bad wait till you hear about Moses and pharaoh at the Red Sea crossing. Wink

It is very cute that you should speak of “god” with a such an adult like knowing air as if god actually exists to be known.
