Vlad the impaler,   Realizing his outclassed military force could never repulse ottoman forces in actual battle, successfully repulsed sultan Mehmet II  by impaling 25000 people on stakes along the anticipated route of advance of the ottoman army.

The sultan explained that he retreated after seeing the appalling spectacle because he didn’t want to kill a person who had done such a great deed as Vlad had.

The battleship Musashi was named after the Musashi province in Japan,   Not for Musashi Miyamoto.   All Japanese battleships of WWII era were named for historic provinces in Japan.   No Japanese warships of any kind were ever named for a person.

Tell it to Minamoto.

Tell it to the Musashi province, which had existed for a thousand years before The Miyamoto was born.

I heard that Mr. Yamato was pretty snazzy too.

Battleship or not, the Miyamoto Musashi Budokan is a more fitting memorial.

Titus Manlius, the Roman Consul who personally slew a huge Gallic warrior champion in single combat in response to a challenge, and who had his own son executed for disobeying the order of the son’s own superior officer.

I didn’t realize we could pick more than one.

If the stories about her were reliable, I’d nominate Madame Bathory. Since they aren’t, I won’t.
