fictional. The assassin embellished the story. In reality He was shot in the forehead from point blank range by a large caliber revolver firing an unjacketed lead bullet, and died instantly. His autopsy report is still extant, and show he wasn’t poisoned nor beaten nor drowned.
Learned something new today.

Miyamoto Musashi, Japanese ronin, strategist, philosopher, author, painter, and calligrapher. Undefeated in a record 61 sword duels.

Important enough to have one of these named after him.

I’m not convinced that leading a military force, however effective and brilliant the leadership, qualifies as badassery. Jake LaMotta was more of a badass than Scipio.

The battleship Musashi was named after the Musashi province in Japan, Not for Musashi Miyamoto. All Japanese battleships of WWII era were named for historic provinces in Japan. No Japanese warships of any kind were ever named for a person.

Poor Musashi ferried troops and admirals around, blocked a US torpedo with her hull once, then was sent to Davy Jones' locker in October of 1944. Not badass at all.

Musashi took 22 torpedo hits to sink, twice as many as the next runner up in terms of the most battle damage absorbed by any warship before sinking, which happen to be her sister ship Yamato, and musashi was still underway and navigable after absorbing all that, and it took yet quite a long time before eventually succumbing to progressive flooding, much longer than titanic after the iceberg or Yamato after her many fewer torpedo hits.
I think she has a title shot for being the preverbal Rasputin amongst battleships.
